ACTIVITY ONE: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. Powerpoint sort: In this activity you will sort a range of businesses into the sectors in which they operate.
You should then sort the descriptions for each sector and place them under the pictures. Lastly you can make it really pop and use some creativity (different fonts, colors) to turn it into a poster. Once you have done this upload it to Show My Homework (SMHW) |

ACTIVITY TWO: Subtitle: Private sector and Public sector enterprises. The ownership of firms is another thing that distinguishes firms from one another. Most of the firms in the USA are privately owned under different legal forms. See the table on page 200. Some firms are State-Owned enterprises (SOE's), owned by the state and referred to sometimes as nationalized industries. An example of one of these is the worlds largest energy company Saudi Aramco. Another example of an SOE is Amtrak in the USA, this is a state owned business that brought together America's long distance passenger railways in the 1970's to avoid their bankruptcy (going out of business). Have you ever travelled by Amtrak in the USA, if not why not?

Extension activity which is optional: This activity is designed to encourage wellness by getting you to consider the beautiful American outdoors and the cultural landscape of the USA.
Can you plan an Amtrak 'Rail Trip' from Houston to another major city in the USA? Where will you go to and what will you see along the way? What cities will you stop at along the way and what culture, food, sightseeing would you do. A good 'Rail trip' journey length with stopovers would be about a week. Happy planning!!

ACTIVITY THREE: Small, Medium and Large Size enterprises. You are now going to research how the size of firms is measured and how this impacts on how they operate and the potential profits and rewards that their ownership will receive. You will need to have read pages 203-204 to support your completion of this activity. We can measure the size of a firm using 4 commonly used measurements. These include number of employees, organization, capital employed and market share. In the next activity you are going to use a powerpoint to help you structure research into the size of firms.
