Why did Richard Whiting die such a horrible death?

1. The story of Whiting's death
- Your teacher will tell you the story of the death of Richard Whiting, which is very gruesome. He may even have some Gregorian Chants playing to create atmosphere. You can also read it here: The gruesome death of Richard Whiting.docx . This is a picture to go with the story Glastonbury Tor.pptx
- After the teacher has read the story you will probably be wondering why he was killed in such a brutal manner. Well, it is your job to figure that out. Use the following bits of information about Richard Whiting and other people to come up with a hypothesis.
- Firstly, look for people who appear a lot in the information. You should find Whiting, Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII. Use a colour coding system to identify which ones talk about these people. Try to look for connections between the clues.
- Now glue down the cards into an inner box for information about Richard Whiting & Glastonbury Abbey, and middle box for Thomas Cromwell and the dissolution of the monastries, and an outer one for information to do with Henry VIII and the English Reformation.
- Look for cards that help build up your understanding because they are linked. When you have identified ones that have connections draw a line between them.
- Now look in more detail about the Break with Rome by reading pages ??????? of Changing Minds and completing Steps 1-3.
- Your teacher may get you to do the booklet designed for younger students about the Break with Rome
- Do you think Henry would have been happy with the way things turned out after he broke with Rome?
- Can you state two or three reasons why Whiting was kiled? (3)
- Can you make a few links between Whiting's death and/or Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII? ( 4)
- Can you explain the connections between Richard Whiting's death, the dissolution of the monasteries and break with Rome? (5)
- Extra support: You might find it easier to organise the cards under the headings when you start the investigation. Check out the wikpedia entry for Richard Whiting if you are really stuck http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Whiting_(Abbot)
- Extra challenge: Add another heading entitle Martin Luther and the European Reformation and do your own research to see how this is connected to the story.
