The Americas were home to a number of different civilisations. The three largest and most powerful of these civilisations were the Inca, Maya and Aztec empires. The Inca people lived on the western side of South America, in the region that is now Chile and Peru. The Maya lived in eastern present-day Mexico on what is called the Yucatan Peninsula, and bordering them to the west were the Aztecs. These three civilisations were made up of a number of tribes and nations. The two civilisations of the Aztecs and Maya make up the region known as Mesoamerica, a region of spectacular temples, architecture and a proud heritage.
