Help: What should a paragraph look like?
Level 5
Almost a thousand years ago King John signed Magna Carta. From 1199 to 1216, John of England was king. John was a stubborn king, who wouldn’t listen. He was also called John Lackland because he lost so much land in the time he was king. Every king was expected to protect the people, to maintain the law and order, and to make sure the people were treated fairly. If kings would succeed to this the barons would in return serve the king. But John, he failed to do most of this. He spend most of his money on wars that he lost anyway and he was rude to the people and to the barons. Back then the kings had all the power, no one could tell them what to do. John strongly agreed that he was the one with all the power and that if he wanted to go to war, the people would pay for it. He wanted the people to pay tax, while they couldn’t even afford to buy food. In 1215, the barons had enough. They had enough of the way John treated them. They had enough of everything that John did. They wanted him to listen to them. So the barons came together and made Magna Carta. Magna Carta was a set of rules that kings would have to obey. The barons forced King John to sign Magna Carta. This was the first time in English history, that anyone spoke out to the king and made him follow rules. At first, John didn’t want to sign Magna Carta but the barons compelled John to sign Magna Carta. Eventually, he did. The barons gained power. And John was a little less powerful. Magna Carta says that King John had to rule according to the law. Magna Carta changed history forever. Every king and queen that came after John had to sign Magna Carta, with a few changes. It controlled their power for hundreds of years.
