Look at the two cartoons below - see if you can work out the message of each cartoon? In what ways do they suggest that Monarchy has changed?
Read the following story - what happened after the return of Charles II?
WHO HAD CONTROL AFTER 1660? - Balloon Debate task
1. Introduction
2. Gathering evidence about the monarchs
3. Balloon debate
Resources:
- You are going to investigate how powerful the monarchs were who ruled after 1660. In particular, you are going to decide which kings and queens lost the most power to parliament.
2. Gathering evidence about the monarchs
- Start with pages 86-87 and gather evidence that Charles II and James II demonstrated they were still in charge during their reigns and evidence that they were losing power e.g. for Charles you could put in the postive column that he had the same powers his father had when he was king, and in the negative column that he didn't have any money.
- You should set your notes out in a chart as set out in Step 1 on page 87. Once you have done Step 1, gather evidence about William and Mary and Anne from pages 88 & 89 for Step 2. Finally, do the same for George I and George II on page 90.
- When deciding what to write in the negative or positive column think about these things:
3. Balloon debate
- You are now going to be split into 7 groups: one group for each monarch and one group as judges.
- If you are not a judge you will need to defend one of the monarchs and criticise one of the other monarchs.
- If you are a judge you will review all of the monarchs first of all, then hear their cases and finally decide who is leaving the balloon.
