​HOW SIMILAR WERE HITLER AND STALIN?

In this enquiry you are going to be studying two men from lowly backgrounds who managed to become dictators of two of the most powerful countries in the world. By the end you should be able to describe their lives, why they came to power and aspects of their rule. However, you should also be able to explain some differences between them and some similarities.

1. Recap what can you remember from our study of Nazi Germany?
  • Fill in the first column of this table, which covers the key aspects of Hitler and his rule over Germany

2. What similarities in Joseph Stalin's early life were there with Hitler?

  • Read over the profile of Stalin from page 106 in the SHP Year 8 textbook.​
  • Note down any similarities with Hitler in the second column of the table and differences in the third column.
  • We will then discuss our finsings as a class and then decide on a similarity score.

3. How similar were other aspects?
  • You are now going to work through the other sections. You can do this by yourself or break up the work load with your partner or a small group
  • If you work as a partnership or small group then make sure you fully explain what you have noted rather than just letting them copy.
  • We will discuss each of the similarity scores as a class
4. Making effective comparisons: 
  • We are now going to pull our notes together to write an extended piece of writing answering the question: How similar were Stalin and Hitler?
  • What structure would you adopt to answer this question?
  • Look at the two Plans on page 122 and take note of the advice about why Plan B is more effevtive
