In what ways was the beheading of King Charles I, the restoration and the Bill of Rights a turning point in the story of power?
The story of power
As we have learned parliament was growing in strength but was still not powerful enough to control the power of the King by 1500. As well as this the Reformation had led to a split in the Christian Church with the development of the Protestant church. This led to a series of religious changes in England and across Europe. Communities were divided over the two religions and the monarch had the power to make any changes that he or she wanted. Following the split from Rome England had been both Protestant and Catholic depending on the monarch in charge. This created great anxiety and fear amongst the people and led to a lot of conflict and instability.
These two events led to one of the most significant chain of events in the story of power - the beheading of King Charles, the Restoration and the Glorious Revolution. For the first time in history parliament would change places with the monarch in terms of power. The death of King Charles I led to the development of a constitutional monarchy in England and this created huge political consequences throughout Europe.
