What: The factors affecting climate
Why: So that you are able to describe the climate system and explain the main influences on climate
How: Produce a mini presentation to explain the factors that influence climate
Starter:
What is the difference between weather and climate? Discuss in pairs and as a class come up with defintions of both terms.
Main activities:
Introduction to the climate system. The climate system includes and is influenced by complex interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, land, ice and biosphere.

From the resources above you should now know more about the following influences on the world climate:
How would you explain each process to a young audience of 10 year olds? What are the key words you would use?
As as class come up with success criteria to judge the presentations.
In pairs, write a 5 minute presentation that explains each of the processes and present this to your class. Page 48-49 in Geog 2 will help with the information.
Present to at least one other pair- what will they think about your presentation?
Plenary:
Use the criteria for judging another pair’s presentation.
How effective was their presentation and why?
- Latitude
- Location relative to continents and oceans
- Situation in relation to large scale atmospheric circulation patterns
- Altitude
- Local geographical features such as topography (hills and mountains) or the nature of a built up area
