CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY:REFORMING FRANCE 1789-92
INTRODUCTION: REFORM PROGRAMMES OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
The Assembly passed significant reforms which altered many of France's institutions. Many sections of society were politicized as the revolution took hold in the country. Changes to the way the Catholic Church was organized alienated many who had previously supported the reforms of the National Assembly. The changes were certainly not to everyone's liking, as the growth of a counter-revolution suggests.

what: Rise of the jacobins and the cordeliers and the beginning of a republican movement
INTRODUCTION: At the centre of all the events which were unfolding was the King. His distaste for what was happening within France and to his authority became evident during his attempt to flee the country known as the flight to Varennes. Whatever assurances he might give to the contrary, he was clearly ill at ease in the role of a constitutional monarch. His opponents for their part were uncomfortable with him, as the growth of Republicanism would indicate.
Starter: Complete the Socrative on the early phase of the revolution. You should be able to complete the first 3 questions fairly easily. The final 2 is a taster of things to come!

La Revolution Français (1989):
The Death of Mirabeau The Flight to Varennes The Bringing back of the King |
TOK:The film was generally considered by historians as historically accurate. Among the few departures from the historical facts, the executioner Charles-Henri Sanson was shown executing both Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. The elder Sanson actually executed only Louis XVI; it was his son who executed Marie-Antoinette, however Charles-Henri Sanson did attend the execution.
Some critics pointed, however, that the film suffered from its neutrality, which resulted in a lack of point of view and in some incoherence. The first part, which dealt with a complex historical subject, was also criticized for its disjointed pacing. The second part was considered by audiences and critics more gripping and dramatic. Jean-François Balmer received great praise from critics and audiences for his portrayal of a rather sympathetic Louis XVI, and Andrzej Seweryn was considered very convincing as Robespierre. Despite critical success, the film was not a box office success in France. 1. Is it a strength or a weakness that the film tries to paint an objective picture of the revolution. To what extent can historical films 'suffer from their neutrality'. 2. Does it matter if minor historical facts are inaccurate in historical films. |
