International school san roberto MUN 17-19 NOVEMBER 2021
INTRODUCTION: In its 20th year ISRMUN 2021 is Nord Anglia's prestige MUN event for the Americas. We are excited that through GJL, BIS Houston will be attending with its largest ever delegation!
1.0 Choosing a committee assignment
1.0 WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS?
Model UN is about advocacy and representation. It is your role as a delegate at a conference to be as best prepared as you can be to represent the interests and views of your country on whatever committee assignment you are sitting on.
Choosing an appropriate committee assignment ensures that you can contribute as effectively as possible. Although the emphasis of MUN is concerned with the skills of problem solving global issues it has a competitive element and there are awards for delegate contributions. To see the rubrics used in ISRMUN 2021 go to the resources section at the bottom of the page.

1.1 WHICH COMMITTEE WILL YOU CHOOSE?
In your introductory email to ISRMUN you have 3 committees that you can choose to sit on, whilst we cannot guarantee your first choice we will try to accommodate all requests as best we can.
Open up your email to begin research on the work of each committee at ISRMUN 2021. Click the link below and begin to navigate the committees sections of the ISRMUN website. You will find the 3 committees you can choose from. For each you will find the background paper. You should read this detailed paper carefully. Your interest in the work of the committee will be the most important factor in deciding whether to join a committee or not. You should make notes about each of the 3 committees and focus on the following things:
1. What is the committee looking into?
2. What type of committee is it; regular, crisis, fantasy, JWC?
3. What is the topic to be covered, how does this relate to other parts of your curriculum?

Once you have researched the work of each committee you are now going to explain why you are choosing the committee. In this group activity you will describe to the others in your group the work of the committee (everyone will have different committees) and explain how you have ranked them and the process you have used. This is a great chance for others to learn about all the other committees at ISRMUN 2021. It might be useful to use the following scaffold to report back to your group:
1. Explain the work of each committee;
a.) what type of committee is it (regular, crisis, fantasy, JWC)
b.) what is the topic of the committee (what will be debated in the committee?)
2. How you have ranked each committee what was your reasoning (don't just say because it looked more interesting - explain why!)
3. Ask others if they have any questions about the work of any of these committees.

2.0 PREPARING FOR CONFERENCE
2.1 a quick introduction to model un procedure (through a rather frantic crisis committee!
ISRMUN 2021 utilizes specific rules of procedure in order to promote a fair and orderly debate. These rules provide participants with an outlet to discuss topics in a structured manner that will also allow them to reach agreements and promote collaboration.
It should be noted that ISRMUN uses the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) protocol. These rules of procedure are commonly used in simulations across the Americas with some variation. Therefore, we encourage participants to familiarize themselves with the protocol that will be used during ISRMUN. Position Papers Preparation is essential to a successful ISRMUN simulation. Each committee features background papers to introduce and familiarize participants with the topics that will be discussed in the committees. All delegates debating in regular committees are required to research and write a position paper about their assigned topic. All position papers should include a list of sources used written in APA or MLA format. It is mandatory for all delegates to submit their position paper to the Chair prior to the event. Please see the individual committee pages for more information. Delegations that do not submit a position paper to the Chair will be ineligible for awards. You will have 20 minutes to prepare for the committee by learning as much as you can about the procedures of Model UN and the process by which a country's delegation prepares for a committee. You may find this all a little bit confusing in the beginning, but try your hardest to contribute to the flow of debate and utilize the procedures as much as possible.
