The Enlightenment
The Story of Power
The Beheading of King Charles I, the restoration and the Glorious Revolution led to the creation of the English Bill of Rights. This was a constitutional agreement between Parliament and the Monarch's of England. This was significant as it marks the beginning of Constitutional Monarchy that still exists in Britain today. This meant that the monarch now shared power with the parliament and could no longer rule as he or she wished. Despite this shift in power from king to parliament, power was still shared between the top 5% of the richest people in Britain. Only a small number of people could vote and the vast majority of ordinary people had no say in how their country was run. The parliament was a collection of rich men who saw no reason to reform the lives of the ordinary man and women had no say at all - rich or poor.
This would all change due to a period of time that has became known as the Enlightenment. This was a period of ideas and new ways of thinking. In the 16th century there was a Scientific Revolution where lots of new scientific discoveries change the way people saw the world. These ideas were developed by Enlightenment thinkers and applied to the behaviors of people and on how countries should be ruled. Many of these thinkers proposed new types of government and some believed that power should be passed to the people.
These ideas had a huge impact on Europe. It let many people to question the old feudal system and to demand reforms. It led to number of significant revolutions in the USA and France and led many rulers to fear that revolution would spread. They began to pass reforms in their countries to prevent people from rising up. The Enlightenment started the shift in power from parliament to people.
