In what ways was the reformation a turning point in the story of power?
the story of power
Magna Carta and the growth of parliament between 1250 and 1500 began to limit the power of Medieval Kings more and more. Despite this they still remained the most powerful people in society and still ruled with the help of a small number of powerful barons. Medieval kings also, as we have learned, shared part of their power with the church. The Pope, Head of the Catholic Church supported the position of kings by supporting the "Divine Right of Kings' but challenged the power of kings as Rome grew more and more powerful.
In the early 1500's an event known as the REFORMATION would see the Catholic Church challenged for the first time. Martin Luther, a German priest, criticized the Catholic Church and began a movement which would lead to a new branch of christianity - Protestantism. This led to a reduction in the power of the Pope and an increase in the power of Medieval monarchs but it also led to many wars and political instability that would last for many centuries. It also led people to question the divine authority of the king and led to new ways of thinking.
