What: Climate change mitigation and adaption strategies
Why: To evaluate the different ways in which we can deal with the cause and impacts of climate change
How:
•Distinguish between mitigation and adaptation
•Research some different adaptation strategies
•Make predictions about what life may be like in 2045
There are 3 broad ways in which governments can respond to the threat of climate change:
1.Do nothing
2.Act to reduce the severity or intensity of climate change by reducing the output of greenhouse gases and/or decreasing greenhouse stores. Mitigation.
3. Adjust to changes in the environment, for example by building coastal defences, rather than trying to stop climate change from happening. Adaption

Mitigation strategy: Planting more trees
|
Task:Write a 100 word summary of how trees will reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere
Extension:How could trees also be seem as an adaption strategy? |
Adaptation: How is water supply managed in the Himalayas?
Task: How effective do you think the artificial glacier (ice stupas) project will be? Why?
Think about:
What is the scale of the project?
What are the benefits?
What are the limitations (problems)?

Adaptation to sea level rise in Tuvalu
The ‘migration with dignity’ policy is part of Kiribati’s long-term nation-wide strategy. This aims to create opportunities for those who wish to migrate abroad now and in the near future. The goal is to develop expatriate communities in various receiving countries, such as Australia and New Zealand, so that they may support other migrants in the longer term, and also to enhance the opportunity for remittances to be sent back. The second part of the policy is to improve the levels of education and training in Kiribati. It is hoped that this training and education will provide opportunities to migrate abroad ‘with dignity’.
Task: Choose 2 of the adaptation strategies being used in Tuvalu
1.Explain how it will help the population of Tuvalu?
2.Evaluate its effectiveness. How much will it help? What are the issues?

You are going to imagine it’s the year 2045. You are going to write a postcard from 2045 back through time to your ‘today self.’
You will use your research on effects of climate change and adaptation and mitigation to write a postcard from the future.
Answer the following questions in your text on your postcard:
•How is the 2045 climate different from the current climate?
•How is the 2045 climate similar to the current climate?
•Why have these changes occurred? (did we put in place effective adaptation or mitigation strategies?)
•How does the climate of 2045 affect your life?
•Is your 2045 quality of life better or worse than your current quality of life?
Once you have finished either draw a suitable image for the front of your postcard (will this image show future destruction or a planet that has reduced it's environmental impacts?).
